The Role

Kerna AI Innovation, part of US-based Kerna Health ), is a newly established AI team in Athens, Greece. We are seeking a skilled Senior Back-End Engineer (Python) to join our back-end team, contributing actively to the development of scalable, high-performance systems for US healthcare services. This role involves hands-on Python development, collaboration within the team, and working closely with our Lead Back-End Engineer to deliver robust asynchronous solutions.

Responsibilities

● Development & Scalability: Develop and implement high-performance, distributed systems and APIs leveraging microservices, serverless (AWS Lambda), and asynchronous programming using asyncio according to established architectural guidelines.

● Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with the Lead Back-End Engineer and coordinate effectively with Product, Frontend, DevOps, and AI teams to ensure alignment with business objectives and user requirements.

● Code Quality & Best Practices: Participate actively in pull request reviews, adhere to high coding standards, support CI/CD pipelines, and promote test-driven development (TDD).

● Cloud & Infrastructure: Support AWS deployments (e.g., ECS, EKS, Lambda), optimize database interactions (SQL/NoSQL), and assist in ensuring system security, scalability, and reliability.

● Agile & Process Optimization: Actively participate in Agile methodologies and contribute to ongoing improvements of engineering workflows.

AI-Assisted Development: Leverage AI-driven tools to improve coding efficiency, assist in debugging, and enhance backend system performance.

Requirements

Education:

● Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field

Work Experience:

● 4+ years of back-end development experience (Python required).

Technical Skills:

● Strong Python Expertise: Deep knowledge of Python, including frameworks like FastAPI, Django, or Flask for building Microservices and RESTful APIs.

● Asynchronous Programming: Extensive experience with Python's asyncio library for developing scalable asynchronous services.

● Microservices & Distributed Systems: Hands-on experience designing and scaling Microservices architectures.

● AWS & Cloud Services: Proficiency with AWS services (EC2, ECS, EKS, S3, RDS, Lambda) or similar public cloud platforms (GCP, Azure).

● Database Technologies: Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and/or NoSQL solutions (MongoDB, DynamoDB).

● Messaging & Streaming: Working knowledge of Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis Streams, or similar messaging/streaming platforms.

● CI/CD & Testing: Proficiency with GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or GitLab CI, plus testing frameworks (PyTest, unittest).

● Containerization & Orchestration: Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.

Nice to Have
