We are seeking a passionate individual, with previous relevant work experience, to become a member of our EU projects team. The team designs and implements important environmental projects in collaboration with major environmental organizations across the EU and the globe. Projects include a variety of environmental topics and subject areas such as biodiversity restoration, preservation and conservation, sustainable tourism, sustainable agriculture, engagement of stakeholders, environmental education, public awareness and landscape policies. EU projects are of strategic importance to HSPN, and a major element of its activities.

The successful candidate will be participating in the formulation and execution of the EU team strategy, including forward planning, contacts, providing proposal ideas, contributing to proposal writing and ensuring the efficient implementation of projects. In addition to being on the EU projects team (s)he will also work cross-departmentally, promoting the purpose and vision of the organization.

The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature is a national environmental non-governmental organization that has been active since 1951, dedicated to the protection of the natural environment. The HSPN is a member of important environmental organizations such as the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Mediterranean Information Office (MIO). It also represents the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a worldwide educational organization, operating all five of its international programs for environmental education and sustainable management in the tourism sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordination and Management of projects and more specifically:
  • Strategic planning, coordination, and monitoring of the implementation of projects, aiming to meet timelines, budgets, and quality indicators.
  • Effective management of human and material resources, collaborating smoothly and leveraging the unique capabilities and skills of each team member.
  • Monitoring and reporting of project progress through reports and performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Preparation of scientific reports, articles, and deliverables, in accordance with program requirements.
  • Ensuring high standards of scientific and technical quality at all stages of projects.
  • Designing and implementing outreach and communication actions and utilizing social media.
  • Participation and representation at national and international meetings, conferences, and workshops.
  • Organization and coordination of events, conferences, educational seminars, and pilot actions.
  • Financial management and monitoring of expenses, in collaboration with the accounting/finance team.
  • Risk assessment and problem-solving to ensure the smooth operation of projects.
  • Contributing to policy development processes, linking project results with institutional and policy initiatives.
  • Maintaining contacts and developing collaborations with existing and new partners, enhancing cooperation networks at European and international levels.
  • Overseeing and contributing to proposal writing, budget creation, and ensuring compliance with funding program guidelines.
  • Being current and knowledgeable on environmental issues, new policies, and best practices.
  • Positive influence and awareness-raising among authorities, stakeholders, and public opinion regarding environmental issues.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in project coordination and management of EU-funded or other environmental projects, preferably within NGOs.
  • Previous experience in team management.
  • Excellent knowledge of both Greek and English.
  • Genuine interest in the environment and excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in project management tools, Microsoft Office, and EU project reporting platforms.

Location

The position is based in Athens and requires some travel. HSPN has a remote work policy applicable to all employees.
