is the Athens-based ship management subsidiary of Mercuria Energy Group, one of the world's largest integrated energy and commodity trading companies, operating a large fleet of crude oil tankers, product tankers, bulk carriers, and high-specification bunkering tankers. MM Marine Inc. provides cargo transportation, cargo storage and physical bunkering services with a commitment to safety, environmental protection, efficiency, and reliability. Our integrated ship management organization covers crewing, safety, maintenance, procurement, operations, sale & purchase, newbuilding construction and chartering. The owned fleet consists of 41 vessels from 4,500 dwt to 180,000 dwt (small product tankers and bunkering tankers, LR1, Suezmax, Capesize) rapidly expanding with a newbuilding program of MR1, LR1, LR2, VLCC and Newcastlemax, with deliveries between 2026 and 2029. The owned fleet serves both Mercuria's freight trading business as well as handling all shipping activities of Minerva Bunkering, the world's largest marine fuels physical supplier, a Mercuria wholly owned subsidiary.
Job Description
As a Plan Approval Engineer your role focuses on performing detailed plan and design reviews of ongoing newbuilding and other major projects in order to verify compliance with the contractual requirements, classification rules and statutory regulations, communicating with classification societies and shipyards to resolve issues related to conflicting design requirements, ensuring that the applicable standards are met during the plan approval process, offering support to the supervision teams on site.
You will be reporting to the Head of Projects and be part of our New Buildings and Projects team in Athens.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Review and approve designs, plans, drawings, and technical specifications to ensure compliance with newbuilding projects construction specifications, classification societies rules, statutory regulations, and guidelines.
- Cooperate with the members of the team and of other departments to identify and resolve potential design issues and offering recommendations for improvements and solutions.
- Coordinate the plan review process, ensuring that the review activities are effectively managed.
- Provide technical guidance to shipyards and site teams during the design and construction process.
- Participate in the selection of makers to the best interests of the company.
- Participate in risk assessment activities related to the design of vessels.
- Review the progress reports of the site teams and take appropriate action to ensure requirements are met.
- Verify structural calculations and/or stability calculations, where necessary.
- Communicate with classification societies for regular updates on new rules and regulations which have to be incorporated in new projects.
- Communicate with machinery and equipment manufacturers to clarify project related design issues.
- Stay informed about the latest maritime technological developments and best practices for the design, construction, and operation.
Education, Abilities & Skills
- University degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering or a related field.
- As a minimum, experience of two (2) years as a plan approval engineer either with a Class Society, Ship Owner/Manager, Charterer or Consulting Bureau.
- Relevant experience in newbuilding site supervision, negotiation of shipbuilding contracts, or repair and upgrade of vessels for owners/ship managers or shipyards is considered advantageous.
- Good experience and knowledge of the plan approval processes, classification society rules, statutory regulatory requirements and engineering principles.
- Good experience and knowledge of shipboard machinery, piping and outfitting systems and equipment.
- Familiarity with safety standards, environmental regulations and quality management systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to cooperate with diverse people.
- Proficiency in computer software (MS Office, SharePoint, AutoCAD, etc.).
- Ability to work on multiple projects in close cooperation with the members of the team and meet tight schedules and deadlines.
- Good time management. Ability to prioritize requirements/tasks, coping with multiple tasks if necessary.
- Initiative and independence.
