Job Overview

The Ecosystems Division of the United Nations Environment Programme works with international and national partners to provide technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy. We are seeking a highly skilled Public Information Officer to join our team in Athens, Greece.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Information Programmes: You will be responsible for developing and implementing information programmes to publicize priority issues, major events, programme initiatives, and accomplishments of the MAP Barcelona Convention system.
  • Monitor and Analyze Current Events: You will monitor and analyze current events, public opinion, press coverage, and information needs of the Parties and key constituents.
  • Promote and Coordinate Media Coverage: You will promote and coordinate media coverage of priority issues and major events, including developing a media strategy and action plan.
  • Initiate and Sustain Professional Relationships: You will initiate and sustain professional relationships with key MAP partners, service providers, and constituencies.
  • Produce or Oversee Production of Information Communications Products: You will produce or oversee the production of information communications products, such as press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, radio spot program, social media, etc.
  • Plan and Coordinate the Production of Publications: You will plan and coordinate the production of publications of the MAP Barcelona Convention Secretariat, ensuring adherence to mandates, strategic objectives, and environmental sustainability directives.
  • Prepare Initial Drafts of Articles or Chapters: You will prepare initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports, and books.
  • Establish and Run a Centralized Library Network: You will establish and run a centralized library network with automated access-point to information and data.
  • Develop and Maintain Information Architecture of Websites: You will develop and maintain information architecture of the websites of the MAP Barcelona Convention Secretariat, coordinating and exercising quality control over website content.
  • Plan and Coordinate Exhibitions and Side Events: You will plan and coordinate exhibitions and side events during the meetings of the Conferences of the Parties and their subsidiary bodies.
  • Participate in Planning and Preparation of Budget, Work Programme, and Spending Plan: You will participate in the planning and preparation of the budget, work programme, and spending plan for the information programme of the Secretariat.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Advanced University Degree: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, public relations, environmental sciences, international relations, business, or public administration is required.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration, or related areas is required.
  • Languages: Fluency in English and French is required, and knowledge of other UN Mediterranean languages is desirable.
