Job Title:
Compliance Officer
Company Overview:
We are a U.S.-based consulting firm specializing in international sanctions and financial crime compliance. Our team conducts due diligence investigations on companies and individuals across the maritime sector and beyond, helping clients ensure compliance with global regulatory requirements. Our clients include shipowners, charterers, cargo operators, insurers, brokers, banks, and other financial institutions. We assess counterparties, cargoes, and transactions against sanctions regimes, identify potential risks, and provide written risk assessments that support clients in meeting international compliance and recordkeeping obligations.
Job Purpose:
The Compliance Officer will manage due diligence projects, liaise with clients, provide tailored compliance advice, and support business development efforts to expand the company's portfolio. This role is ideal for professionals with experience in compliance, sanctions, or the maritime industry, or a combination of these backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct due diligence on behalf of clients (e.g., shipowners, charterers) regarding their prospective fixtures, assessing whether the parties involved, their ultimate beneficial owners (UBOs), the cargo, and the activity itself pose sanctions risks.
- Perform due diligence on vessel registrations, insurance applications, and when a vessel is purchased or conducts ship-to-ship (STS) operations with a client's vessel, including cases of management, ownership, or flag changes requiring additional assessment, on behalf of flag registries, P&I clubs, shipowners, charterers, banks, and other stakeholders.
- Carry out monitoring investigations when there are indications that vessels may have engaged in illicit activities and evaluate the level of risk involved.
- Respond to general client inquiries regarding the legality of fixtures, entities, or cargo under international sanctions or specific jurisdictions.
- Assess broader financial crime risks, including AML, PEP exposure, bribery, and other red flags within transactions.
- Act as the key point of contact for client questions, ensuring clear and responsive communication.
- Support marketing and business development initiatives to expand the firm's client base and portfolio.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Law, Shipping, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of compliance, regulatory frameworks, and risk management.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a compliance/regulatory role, role in the shipping industry, or a combination of both.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong communication and report-writing abilities.
- High attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Flexibility to respond to urgent matters outside standard working hours due to the nature of the (shipping) industry which operates around the clock.
- IT proficiency and efficiency in using compliance, research, and reporting platforms.
Preferred Skills:
- Professional certifications (e.g., GDPR, P&IQ-related qualifications) will be valued.
- Experience in Data Protection will be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of international compliance standards.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
