Expert on Floods

Our team focuses on innovative approaches to address challenges related to flood modelling, mapping, monitoring, early warning, forecasting and mitigation, as well as water resources and drought monitoring, integrating data from the EU Copernicus program, and other sources.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribution to flood modelling, mapping, monitoring, early warning, forecasting and mitigation, as well as water resources and drought monitoring, integrating Earth Observation data from the EU Copernicus program as well as other data sources.
  • Collaboration with Project Managers of the Unit towards advancing the quality and timeliness of project deliveries if/where possible.
  • Participation in transfer of knowledge activities of BEYOND.
  • Contribution to proposal writing, project realisation, and deliverable preparation.
  • Preparation of research papers and contribution to the dissemination of findings.
  • Production of clear and concise documentation of defined procedures and regular updates to facilitate knowledge sharing and seamless team collaboration inside the Unit.
  • Being an integral part of our tech-minded team, engaging in knowledge sharing, brainstorming, and contributing to the collective growth and success of the Unit.
  • Occasional travel for project meetings, presentations and international collaboration.

Qualifications
:

Essential:

  • Demonstrated experience in hydrology and flood modelling (2D with HEC and/or other models).
  • Demonstrated experience in GIS for flood mapping.
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Good knowledge of at least one programming languages like Python, R or MATLAB.
  • Ability to write technical documentation to facilitate knowledge transfer.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, analytical mindset and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • English language proficiency preferably at C2 level, both written and spoken.

Desirable:

  • Relevant PhD, preferably from the Faculty of Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence.
  • Demonstrated experience in Remote Sensing for flood applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in flood mapping, monitoring, early warning, forecasting and mitigation.
