The Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Financial Controller to lead the finance function of our Athens-based shipbroking office. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the full spectrum of financial and accounting operations in line with Greek Accounting Standards ensuring compliance with local tax and labour regulations working alongside one person and supporting group-level financial reporting in accordance with UK GAAP.

The role requires a proactive individual with a hands-on approach and the ability to operate in a dynamic, international environment. You will play a key role in financial planning, cashflow management, budgeting, reporting, audits, and intercompany processes across multiple jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities:

Statutory Accounting & Compliance (Greece)

  • Supervise daily bookkeeping, journal entries, bank reconciliations, AP/AR, accruals, and general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain and reconcile fixed asset registers, depreciation schedules, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with Greek labour law, social security obligations, and employment-related filings as well as liaise with Greek tax authorities (AADE), external accountants, and legal advisors as needed.
  • Supervise the filing of all local tax obligations including and not limited to VAT returns and payroll taxes

Group Financial Reporting (UK GAAP)

  • Prepare monthly management reports and reporting packs for the Group CFO under UK GAAP.
  • Translate local results into group formats, ensuring consistency and compliance with group policies.
  • Perform intercompany reconciliations and coordinate cross-border journal entries.
  • Support quarterly consolidation processes, adjustments, and group-level audits.

  • Coordinate currency revaluations, IFRS/UK GAAP adjustments, and alignment of accounting treatments.

  • Prepare annual budgets and rolling forecasts for the Greek entity.

  • Maintain and enhance internal control procedures and accounting policies.

  • Ensure accuracy of data within the AccountsIQ system (or other ERP used).

  • Manage document retention, digital archiving, and ensure readiness for audits.

  • Coordinate preparation of audit files and respond to audit queries in a timely manner.

Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics; Master's degree or professional qualification (ACCA, ACA, or Greek equivalent - ΟΕΕ) preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in accounting/finance
  • Deep understanding of Greek Accounting Standards, tax regulations, and payroll.
  • Familiarity with UK GAAP or IFRS for group reporting is a strong advantage.
  • Fluent in Greek and English (both written and verbal).
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and experience with ERP/accounting systems
  • Experience in shipping, shipbroking, or international services is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Proven track record in working cross-functionally with international finance teams.
